Swift Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at the University of Chicago, died May 30, 1992. He taught at the University of Chicago from 1947 until his retirement in 1981. Through his own distinguished work over decades in Fourier analysis as well as through his many students who made important contributions to the field, he founded at Chicago the world's most creative school of classical analysis. The Lecture Series founded in his name by the Department serves to commemorate the impact of Professor Zygmund and his school in the development of modern analysis.
