Todd Rowland

Finally, I am getting around to updating this material. But let me first say that I am not going to change the web page that was here before. It was made during my time as a graduate student here (in the web sense of the word) in the 1990's. As such it gives a pretty good indication of what was going on with me at that time. So I am just going to add some brief updates.

I am still working for Wolfram research, but have done other things for them in addition to my contributions to the mathworld web site. For over a year, I have been helping Stephen Wolfram finish his book. During this period I have been involved in many fascinating projects, and hope to complete some of my own. Naturally, my interests have now shifted towards discrete dynamical systems, with a view towards applications.

I still live in Hyde park . Since I have graduated, my advisor Kevin Corlette has become the department chairman, and now has a web page of his own. The only other major change is that I no longer play as many sports. Below is the previous website. --TR 3/2002.

I recently joined the mathworld team at Wolfram research. The mathworld web site is a great place to find out about recreational --as well as other kinds of-- mathematics.

Due to popular demand, for a link to math250 linear algebra from a class I gave a couple of years ago. Also, a link to my classes from last year, Math 132, or to math 131 calculus the one before that.

Have a look at my thesis in .dvi format or in LaTeX , or check out some code and games.

I finally got around to making one of these page thingees. I guess I should like say something
or something. This reminds me of the time when I went snowshoeing and got lost. Or else
the time when that guy decided to rescue his kidnapped sleeping bag. Perhaps I should
introduce myself...

I was a graduate student in the University of Chicago Department of Mathematics.
My advisor is Kevin Corlette, who doesn't seem to have a web page. You might think
he's not into the techno-nerd thing, but you could be right.

My mathmematical interests are in the area of geometry by way of PDE, in particular manifolds
with special holonomy and calibrations. Right now I am studying geometries associated
with the Cayley numbers. Click here to look at some papers I've written.

As part of the program at the U of C, I taught a couple of calculus classes. See the links
at the top of the page for more information.

Other interests include all sorts of games. Chess, go, poker, soccer, softball, backgammon,
bughouse. Here are the links to the math department teams I played on.
Soccer in the math department, or try the more current Sock IM.
We also have Eckhart Sabres Softball. For a summary of a void victory click here.

Also, I've written a couple of short stories, and some analysis of bughouse games,
Pan Am 94 Bughouse, and some sports commentary. Check out the only paper
I ever got an A for, in a Shakespeare class from MIT 1989.
As well as some experimental pages, there is a hex applet .
